Man might have advanced in leaps and bounds with new technologies simplifying his living. He could meet the basic needs effortlessly, communicate faster, and off-load most of the day-to-day work to man-made systems. However, the recording of his own evolution is one field that yet depends on his inherent faculties to carry out. Writing, which is a tool of communication, brings history, inventions, fiction, illusions, imagination and whatnot to our doorstep. Writings are a great source of knowledge and help for our self-development.
Writing contests are widely popular in academic circles. Students from the age of 10 years are often encouraged to improve their writing skills through writing and essay competitions. In the latter part of the formal education, they continue the exercises through proposal writing, project reports, technical writings etc. In order to create equal opportunities for everyone to assess their writing abilities, writing contests are held regularly by some organizations to invite entrants and encourage quality oriented writing through paying rewards.
Writing contests invite participants to make and submit writings related to any one particular field or subject, generally restricting the size to a few hundred words. They may be general, detective, western, fiction, scientific, romantic, classic literature, short stories, trade related, economics, management etc.
Writing is a linguistic talent, but more than that it is essential for every human to possess and practice. One may not be a master of language, but practice of replicating one’s own thoughts precisely onto paper helps to achieve thought clarity, self-exploration, social connectivity and ultimately self-esteem. For the existing need, writing contests would certainly find a great demand and get huge response.
