Workflow is the movement of processes or any documents through a work process done by using a set of rules or procedures. The process involved in the business automation which uses the documents or the tasks to be passed to perform another action is defined as the workflow. It empowers business owners and content managers to define easily, apply and to reuse the business processes which can interact with the content, the people and the business system.
In the work procedure of any business, the significant operational task that is carried out is the workflow process. The general factors that are performed in a workflow process are structural tasks, one who performs them, the order of relativity, synchronization procedure, the tracking of the procedure and the tracking of information to support the tasks. The common problems are generally are modeled and analyzed using Petri net, which is a mathematical representation of discrete systems.
Workflow is performed using three significant parts. They are the workflow software, workflow management and the workflow automation. Workflow software helps to generate the flow of the work processes in a procedural manner. Workflow management controls and manages the entire workflow of the work process. The automation of the work processes are maintained by the workflow automation process.

Scientific workflow uses the throughput of data through various applications, services and algorithms. The business workflow paradigms are concerned mainly regarding the scheduling task executions and dependencies.
