Wood has been the natural choice for picnic tables for a long time and is still very popular, even though there are a variety of materials available today in the market. When it comes to making wooden picnic tables, there are two choices: redwood and cedar.
Redwood is superior to most other woods when it comes to beauty and performance. It has natural durability, is resistant to insects, and will last longer outdoors than most woods. Furniture made from redwood also ages beautifully, which means that your furniture will still look great ten, fifteen or even twenty years down the line. It is also easy to drill, saw and shape, so that you can easily design a picnic table that suits your surroundings. Most important of all is that there are cost-effective redwood grades specific for every project, whether it is for personal use, public parks, or residential gardens.
Cedar, on the other hand, is also well known for its unique weather-resistant properties, its light weight, and its ability to stay flat and straight for a long time. Its fibers contain oils that act as a natural preservative and make it bacteria- and fungus-resistant. This helps keep your picnic table free from rot and decay, thus making it an excellent material. One big advantage of cedar is that it gives off that richly distinct cedar fragrance that smells very good to us humans, but makes the wood highly unattractive to insects and other pests.
Both cedar and redwood retain their beauty outdoors and are less likely to warp, split, check, or cup than other woods. This means that your redwood or cedar picnic table is less likely to bow or sag over time as many other wood species do.
Finally, cedar in its natural unfinished state has an attractive natural color and a distinguishing grain that looks good even without stain or paint. Redwood, on the other hand, contains little or no pitch or resins. This enables redwood to absorb and retain all types of finishes extremely well.
Although a wooden picnic table is a wonderful option that adds a lot to its surroundings, one needs to keep in mind that wood has to be maintained and looked after so that it can give you many years of service.
