Wireless microphones are microphones which are not connected to any cables and allow freedom of movement. The advantage of wireless microphones is that they allow mobility. Since they are not bound by wires, they offer a wide area of coverage. They do not require any special installation procedures. Wireless model microphones have an internal antenna system.
They operate more like wireless transmitters, but combine the function of boundary microphones. They use radio signals to communicate between transmitters and responders. Wireless microphones require a base receiver and are battery operated. For easy field replacement, thread mount cartridges are used. They have touch sensitive buttons enabling speedy operation. Wireless microphones can be used in courtrooms, boardrooms, stage floors, meeting rooms or in any other place where a gathering has to be addressed.
These mics are used to produce enhanced audio signals. They are available in various frequencies, selection of which depends on the area of coverage required. A standard wireless microphone includes a hand held transmitter with a cardiod dynamic capsule and a diversity receiver. Recently, various companies have come up with headset wireless microphones that provide maximum mobility and reproduction of close proximity signal. This unit comprises of an adjustable headband, super cardiod design capsule, and a wireless mini pin connector. They are best suited for people who have to move a lot to deliver lectures or speeches. They are lightweight and easy to fix. The dance instructors and sports personalities find this model useful, because they give instructions as they dance or as they ride a bike.
There are two types of wireless microphones, a one-piece unit that has an inbuilt transmitter, battery and antenna. In the two-piece unit there is a separate transmitting unit to which the mic is connected. The transmitting range of wireless microphone can be up to a radius of 1000 feet. If there are any obstacles, especially metallic its range may be reduced up to a radius of 250 feet or less. They are available in various models and at various price ranges.
