Cables are usually two or more wires that are bound together in protective jacket or sheath. The individual wires in the cable may be bare, covered, or insulated. However, electrical wire cables that are used for welding are mostly made from aluminum, copper or lead.
Welding cables are characterized by a greater amount of flexibility due to the stranding wires. The smaller individual wires are twisted together to produce a larger wire, which is more flexible than a single solid wire of the same size. This flexibility is a result of bunching of small wires before concentric stranding.
Various welding structures are built to achieve various types of welding, which require distinct cables to carry distinct currents. The #0 (1/0) welding cable is a flexible cable that has a dual jacket and a 600-volt AC/DC rating. The cable is usually available in red and black, and can be ordered from the Internet for a minimum quantity of 5 meters. Similarly, flexible lead wires can also be ordered online. These cables are often used to connect the electrodes to the welder unit. The cable exhibits a supreme level of flexibility at extreme temperatures ranging from a minimum of -50oC to a maximum of +105oC. Besides, the cable has a dual jacket with 600-volt AC/DC rating. These cables are available in spools of 250 ft and 500 ft, and are exclusively available in black.
Special cables are used for inverter stylized welding machines. These special cables are exclusively used to connect the battery to the inverter. A special pair of black and red cables is used with crimped terminal lugs.
The most common cable used for welding machines is the standard K neoprene insulated welding cable. The cable is made from 30-gauge soft-drawn copper strands. The cable maintains its flexibility at extreme temperatures ranging from a minimum of -40oC to a maximum of +90oC.
A good cable is very crucial as it carries a large volume of current and a minor leakage can cause huge disasters. These cables also play a significant role in underwater welding processes.
