When admiral Newport’s ship landed in Virginia, on what is now Virginia Beach, one member of the landing party was so moved by it’s beauty he wrote: “Heaven and Earth never agreed better to frame a place for man’s habitations than Virginia.” George Percy’s awe of Virginia was well founded, and Virginia Beach is still a very popular place to live. Virginia Beach is the 38th largest city in the country and the largest in the state of Virginia with over 425,000 residents. The city is rather cool, with an average annual temperature of 60 degrees. Also, many meteorologists claim Virginia Beach is in one of the best locations when it comes to avoiding storms. It’s south enough to avoid storms originating in the north, yet far enough north to avoid storms coming up from the south.
Virginia Beach has been a resort town for over a century. Railroad service to the city began in 1883, bringing visitors to vacation at what where then some of the country’s most magnificent hotels. Much of the population is in some way affiliated with the armed services. This is thanks to the four military installations in the city. These military bases are: the Oceana Naval Air Station, Little Creek, Fort Story, and Dam Neck. With a booming tourism industry, Virginia Beach offers tours on a handful of different subjects. The lighthouse tour and the whale-watching trip are some of the most popular.
Virginia Beach isn’t just an ideal vacation spot; it’s also a wonderful place to live. One of the main features that draw people is the award winning school system. With a booming economy supported by military bases, a beautiful landscape, a rich cultural history as one of the original colonies, and a strong municipal system, Virginia Beach provides excellence for both visitors and permanent residents.
