Virginia Beach Public Schools

The Virginia Beach school system is known nation-wide as one of the best. A recipient of the Medallion of Excellence from the U.S. Senate, these schools pride themselves in outstanding teachers with a desire to educate. Their outstanding programs have brought them national attention with spots on Good Morning America and articles in USA Today. Newsweek praised four schools in the Virginia Beach area for their outstanding ratio of AP (advanced placement) or IB (International Baccalaureate) tests taken by the entire student body. Educators in the Virginia Beach school system have an exceptionally high percentage of PhDs for a public school system. Also, teachers at these schools have received humanitarian, diversity and cultural excellence awards, and one educator was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in November 2005.

The outstanding programs at Virginia Beach schools have led to awards in diverse fields. For example, the Kemps Landing Magnet School earned first place in Fifth National Garrett Morgan Symposium on sustainable transportation for the future, which took place in July 2005. Also, the Hermitage Elementary School became the first LEED school in the state of Virginia. This Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design distinction was given to the school by the U.S Green Building Council in recognition of their environmentally friendly design.
