The winter season in Vail is not standard. During winter, visitors experience everything from sun to fierce blizzards. On the mountain, the weather conditions alter rapidly, and hence it is recommended to prepare for sudden weather changes. It may feel colder or warmer, depending on whether it is windy or cloudy on one hand, or sunny with still air on the other. It is advisable to dress in layers and wear breathable clothing, such as smart wool. This fabric keeps moisture away from the skin. Sunglasses and sunscreen are indispensable; even if the sun does not appear to be too strong, it is harsher than what it seems.
January is typically the coldest month. The average lows from December through February are colder than 5 degrees Fahrenheit. November, March, and April also feature cold weather. With the winter weather setting in as early as September, Vail has a long ski season. The average temperatures in Vail are as follows: (low, high) December – 6.6, 21; January – 6, 20; February – 7.5, 23; and March – 11, 28.6.
Tourists should not be enticed by visions of a balmy summer in this town. Vail receives an average of 300 days of sunshine a year with little-to-no humidity. The weather can change in a matter of hours, so it is a good idea to be prepared with extra layering when heading outdoors. Near the onset of summer, the weather can be very deceptive; temperatures at ground level can drop to freezing at night. During the summer, the average daytime temperature is an enjoyable 75 degrees, while the average evening temperature is a cool 45 degrees. The daytime highs in the hottest month, July, hit the low 70s, with lows still touching the high 30s.
