A tutor is a private instructor who teaches a specific educational subject or skill to an individual or a small group of people. The purpose of tutoring is to offer individualized academic teaching and test preparation to students.
Hiring a tutor is at times the best way to help struggling students learn a particular subject as many of the distractions inherent in a classroom setting are removed. In addition, the student may feel free to open up to a tutor with questions or concerns in the privacy of a one-on-one session. Academic tutors are available through certain departments on campus or at a learning center in the city. Peer tutoring is an inexpensive means of providing academic support to students. In some cases, a tutor can visit the student at his or her residence. Appointments can be arranged after school or on weekends. Online tutors [sometimes referred to as ‘owl tutors’] are an attractive option as they maximize the advantages of the Internet without compromising on the educational benefits.
Tutors determine the students’ strengths and weaknesses as they work together, so the pace and focus of the tutoring program can be attuned as necessary. They are not tied down to a particular instructional approach. This ability to customize allows them to tailor the program according to the student’s individual needs, rather than trying to synchronize the student’s needs with a specific program.
Tutors work alongside students to evaluate their performance on essays, homework assignments and tests, identify problem areas, review concepts and strategies, and set achievable targets. Their aim is to help students master successful study habits and a focused skill set as they develop a keener understanding of class material. In this manner, students’ grades improve, their confidence level soar, their interest in doing quality work improves, and the dropout rates reduce.
