Testosterone replacement is a treatment used to bring levels of testosterone back to normal in men. Testosterone is a type of male hormone secreted by the testes and the adrenal glands. It is essential for the development of male sex organs, muscle growth, sex drive, and energy levels in the male. During teen years, the production of the hormone is on the increase, resulting in the development of facial hair and a deepening of the voice.
Low levels of testosterone lead to sexual dysfunction, bone loss, muscle atrophy, and mood swings. There are a variety of testosterone replacement options that help you keep normal levels of testosterone in blood. The treatments are available in various dosage forms including injections, gel, patches, and pills.
In order to provide a rapid increase in hormone levels, testosterone injections are applied into a muscle, normally the gluteal muscle (buttocks). Testosterone cypionate and testosterone enanthate are two popular injections. Cypionate is injected into the muscle every 3 to 4 weeks, and enanthate is given every 4 weeks. Like other intramuscular injections, these injections may be painful and are normally taken at a clinic.
Testosterone gels and patches provide a constant level of hormone and are applied once daily. They are normally applied to a clean, dry skin area on the back, upper arms, abdomen, or thighs. Remember that they should never be applied directly to the genitals. Also, avoid putting the patch on broken, oily or irritated skin, sharp body parts, and areas that may be under pressure when sitting or sleeping. The hormone in the gel and patch is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream.
Another way to raise testosterone levels in blood is with pills containing testosterone undecanoate. Most testosterone pills are made from 100% natural supplements and are safe to use. The pills should be swallowed entire without chewing.
There are some general risks and as also benefits associated with all these treatments. In general, treating testosterone deficiency with testosterone replacement can provide increased sex drive, more energy, thicker hair and skin, increased muscle mass, increased bone density, improved mood, and better ability to concentrate and do mental tasks.
