From pumping gas into a vehicle to cleaning the home with a vacuum cleaner, pumps are all around us. Sump pumps are simple mechanical devices used to move fluids by altering pressure levels. There are several different types of pumps, each with their own individual application. One common pump that is used in several households is a sump pump. This pump keeps the basement and the space beneath it from flooding, especially during excessive rainfall. A sump is a small reservoir under the basement that fills up when groundwater level rises. This prevents water from seeping into the basement and cause any damage. However, when the sump level overflows, water may seep into the basement, which will not only ruin the items stored but also damage the foundation of the house.
A sump pump is used to pump out this excess water, keeping the basement dry and free from any damage. These handy devices are of two types. The submersible variety combines the pump and the waterproof motor in one unit. This unit is placed inside the sump. In the second type known as a pedestal sump pump, the motor is placed on a column above the floor of the basement, whereas the pump is located in the sump. While using a pedestal sump pump, care should be taken that the motor does not get wet.
Both pump types are connected to a long outlet pipe, which drains the water a safe distance away from the house. The pumping capacity of the sump pump can vary, depending on the horsepower of the motor and the size of the outlet pipe.
Although electricity is the main power source, a battery backup may prove handy in times of emergency. A plastic or rubber floater is used to trigger the pump. Once the water level rises beyond a certain level, the floater rises and flips the switch.
Sump pumps are essential for those living in areas with high rainfall. The pump will not only prevent flooding but also save thousands of dollars on repair work.
