Student violins are different from professional violins. They are of low cost, and of low quality. Although cheap, modern student violins are far superior to those made 100 or more years ago.
You can buy a violin, rent a violin or borrow a violin. The first two are the extensively practiced methods. Both renting and buying student violins can be done online and from musical stores. Violins that are rented are mostly used violins with slight damages. Renting violins are useful for new students, learning basics of violin. They will cost around $15 a month. New student violins can be purchased for students who complete one year of violin study. Good quality instruments are available for $150.
Student violins are available in a number of sizes, small, intermediate and advanced. The appropriate size is calculated by measuring the arm length of the student. Many internet sites provide violin sizing charts which are useful for determining violin sizes. When buying a student violin, make sure the store has a trade-in program, which allows you to move on to a larger sized violin in the future with minimal cost. Most stores charge $50 to move up to the next size.
Before buying a student violin, go though many sites and reviews. Purchase only from a specialist music instruments supplier. Always buy student violins from vendors who offer good warranty.
Although good quality instruments are of German and Italian origin, most of these are produced by European and Asian countries such as Japan, China, Korea Germany, France, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and Romania. Chinese violins are common these days. They are of low quality and are priced low. Remember, most student violins from Asian countries come with a sticker that says ‘made in Germany’.
