There are many resources available today to help you quit smoking. A number of volunteer organizations offer advice over the telephone to smokers who want to kick the habit. The California Smokers’ Helpline is one such free service. A counselor over the phone listens to your problems and helps you work out a plan that will work for you.
Seeking assistance from people who are well educated about nicotine addiction is one of the best ways to quit smoking. There are large support group networks such as Nicotine Anonymous offering you help. They hold meetings and other programs at almost any hour, in all major towns across the United States and many countries abroad. Also available are online guides and e-mail support.
Many online guides provide comprehensive information on tobacco and its effects. They publish overviews, current research findings, treatment methods and a variety of other assistance. A number of popular public health service brochures come with practical information and helpful tips for you to quit smoking.
You can also download consumer packets from the Internet. The downloadable packet offered by the Surgeon General’s office of The Health and Human Services includes a five-day countdown program, questions and answers, and other information on quitting smoke.
The American Psychiatric Association has an 11-page downloadable booklet in PDF format discussing the myths about stopping smoke, various aids to stop smoking, and the costs involved in each method of quitting. National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health also offer you help with quitting tobacco. The American Cancer Society, in their Guide for Quitting Smoking, examines in detail why it is so hard to quit smoking.
Some Web sites help you by creating a smoke-quitting calendar for you. There are also sites offering 24-hour help online. E-mail help services are also offered at many other sites.
You can also use the services offered by stop smoking clinics available in many parts of the country. These clinics offer treatments such as nicotine replacement therapy and hypnotherapy. Most of these clinics have a successful history of helping people quit smoking.
