Spyware is a broad term that covers a wide variety of malicious software programs designed to take partial control or intercept a computer’s operation without the user’s consent or knowledge. The term spyware literally suggests software programs which monitor the user and send information about individual Web surfing habits to a third party, usually for advertising purposes.
Spyware is also known by various nicknames such as junkware, scumware, and thiefware. Spyware can be compared to a Trojan horse in that it is often quickly installed into one’s computer without his/her knowledge, mostly together with a freeware or shareware program downloaded from the Internet. Occasionally spyware is also installed by simply visiting a Web site. Once installed, the spyware works in the background and transfers personal information.
Spyware varies from viruses and worms in that they do not self-replicate. However, it can exploit infected computers for commercial gains by including delivery of unsolicited pop-up advertisements and steals personal information such as e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.
Since spyware functions as independent executable programs, they come with the ability to scan files on the hard disks; change the default home page on the Web browser; snoop other applications like word processors or chat programs; monitor keystrokes; install other spyware programs; read cookies and send all this information to a third party.
Apart from the questions of privacy and ethics, spyware also eats up bandwidth and the computer’s memory resources while sending data to its home Web site through the user’s Internet connection. This can lead to general system instability or system crashes.
Nowadays, there are several anti-spyware programs that provide real-time protection and prevent spyware from installing itself. These programs also help to scan and remove pre-installed spyware from the computer.
