A slot machine is a game of pure chance in which a person inserts a coin into a slot and pulls a lever or presses a button. The reel located in the center of the machine spins round, and if you are lucky the machine will let you know that you are a winner, and then you collect. The object of the game is to try and hit a winning combination of symbols on the payline. Slots are the most popular machines found in casinos around the world. They account for over 30% of a casino’s profits.
Charles Fay created the first slot machine in 1887. He called the machine ‘the Liberty Bell,’ and it gained popularity immediately. He became very wealthy by renting his machines to gambling establishments at a 50% commission rate. Today, there are hundreds of different slot machine games with fabulous features including lifelike graphics, bells and whistles and some extraordinary payouts.
The two basic slot machine designs are the straight slots and the progressive slots. Straight slots stay at a set amount until the amount is won and then resets and begins again at the same amount. Progressive slots are as it sounds. The jackpot goes higher as more coins are deposited until there is a winner. To play either game a player inserts one or several coins and spins the reel with a lever or button. A player can cash out at any time if he has a share of his money banked in the machine.
