People have to commute long distances to work, complete work targets, complete household chores and take care of their personal responsibilities. The list is endless, from the time a person wakes up till bedtime there is hardly a moment when people can just relax. Even eating a meal is a hurried action. The decision to eat out is seldom only a leisure activity.
The word “restaurant” is derived from the French word “restaurer”, which means ‘to restore.’ The use of this term originated in the 16th century and at that time referred to an incredibly rich and flavored soup. The Guinness Book of Records certifies Sobrino de Botin, which opened in 1725 in Madrid, Spain as the oldest surviving restaurant.
The concept of a restaurant was first practiced in France. After the French Revolution, when the French aristocracy went into exile, they left behind a large entourage of servants who were exceptionally skilled in the art of cooking. With no royal family left to cook for, this group of people started cooking for the common French people to earn a livelihood. Since then, restaurants have grown into a large industry all over the world.
A restaurant is typically a place that serves food and beverage to its customers and which can either be consumed on the restaurant’s premises or taken home. Restaurants are a fast growing business in the United States. The first known restaurant in the country was the Jullien’s Restarator, which opened in Boston in 1794.
Restaurants are of different sizes and offer various types of cuisines. Certain large hotels also have restaurants, which provide dining services for the convenience of the residents, non-residents and guests. There are various specialty restaurants in the US such as seafood restaurants, vegetarian restaurants, fast food or ethnic restaurants. Many restaurants serve alcoholic beverages. The popularity of a restaurant depends on its ambience, hygiene and quality of food and the availability of ethnic dishes on the menu, aimed at the local community. Surveys indicate that the quality of food and the service experience are the pivotal factors determining if a diner would return to an establishment.
