Reading is a very good habit that enhances conversational skill and vocabulary. There are some people who do not enjoy reading. Other than sitting alone and indulging in a good book, reading provides the opportunity for creative imagination. Teachers are constantly faced with the task of improving the language of their students. There are a number of methods that can make the task of teaching students to read a bit simpler. It is observed that one of the most important reading lessons for students is to understand the skills, such as skimming, scanning, and extensive and intensive reading.
Skimming involves reading the main points in a rapid manner, whereas scanning involves rapid reading in order to find a specific piece of information. Extensive reading is often done for pleasure with emphasis on overall meaning of the text and mostly includes long texts, whereas intensive reading includes short texts for detailed information. These are the main reading skills that are taught to students to improve their reading. The skills or styles form an important part of most of the reading lessons. Some teachers also provide the necessary exercises to increase the ability of the students to identify certain details when they read. Another way to improvise the reading skills of students is by using contextual clues. The reading lessons help the students to identify and use the context to their advantage.
The main aim of reading lessons is to improve the reading skills. They not only help to improve reading skills but also help to improve vocabulary and reading speed. Reading lessons help the students to improve their ability to concentrate and absorb the text, in one attempt. This helps them to become better readers and enjoy the activity.
