You can conquer nervousness with some simple homework. A seasoned speaker may manage to sail through any topic. But, if you are a beginner talk about one subject that you feel confident about. Also, accept speeches that allow you considerable preparation time. You can graduate to impromptu speeches after gaining confidence with well-rehearsed ones. The smaller the gathering is, the better for a beginner to gain confidence.
Prepare well on the subject keeping in view the target audience – their age and intellectual level – and the time allotted. Make the best use of books, magazines, subject experts and the Internet to prepare a concise write-up on the topic. Be clear about what you want to convey.
A speech supported by visuals can be most impressive; it also helps divert the attention of the audience from the speaker to the pictures. But take care not to go overboard with the slides. Too many special effects can overshadow the content and defeat the purpose.
Practice the speech – first all by yourself and then with family and friends – using the visuals and holding the microphone. Stand in front of the mirror and observe your facial expressions. This exercise helps you manage your body language. Record the speech on a tape recorder and listen to it. This helps you with tonal modulations.
Go to the venue beforehand and familiarize yourself with the atmosphere. Though you have memorized the speech, take a hard copy for ready reference. Try to relax with breathing exercises until your turn comes.
