Some toilets are portable and can therefore be placed in a specific location when required. A portable toilet is fundamentally a moveable, self-contained outhouse manufactured of moulded plastic.
Portable toilets can only accommodate a single occupant and generally measure about 90 cm by 210 cm. They can stand upright, owing to the weight of the antiseptic liquid in the holding tank at the bottom. Most portable toilets include a seated toilet and a urinal. They feature lockable doors, ventilation near the roof, and a stovepipe vent for the holding tank; some newer models include toilet paper or, occasionally, hand-gel dispensers. In response to popular demand, some companies have manufactured portable toilets with carpeted floors, mirrors, and lights.
Cleanliness is guaranteed in portable toilets, as they are drained, cleaned, disinfected, and deodorized on a weekly basis. There is no danger of portable toilets overflowing, as they are not plumbed. Portable toilets are generally placed on the site on the day of an event and remain there no longer than a day or two after the rental period. There are city, state, and federal codes that require a certain amount of toilets to be available for large events. Portable toilets can be seen at construction sites, concerts, sport venues, and other large outdoor gatherings.
Some portable toilets can be placed into the ground if they are not required to be in operation for a long period. People who purchase portable toilets, but do not like the sight of a public toilet on their property when it is not in operation, usually resort to these measures. They find it easier to conceal it than to physically haul it from site to site.
Portable toilets can be useful for road trips and camping. There are different models to suit diverse needs and budgets. The Reliance Hassock Portable Toilet is an inexpensive model featuring an inner and outer container with a moulded seat; the inner container can be lifted out for disposing of waste. Phillips Environmental PETT Portable Environmental Toilet comes with a waste bag, storage zip bag, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer. The Coleman Portable Toilet is an expensive, self-sufficient portable toilet with a holding tank of up to 2.8 gallons and a fresh water tank of 3.2 gallons.
