Plus-size models are those who normally wear large dresses, size 12 and above. These models are female, and are characterized by their voluptuous and buxom figures. In actuality, plus-size models reflect quintessential and classic tastes, since these kinds of models have been in vogue since very ancient times. Several Hollywood female stars could be classified as plus size models.
The inclination towards plus size models can be traced back to ancient Greek and Roman art, where showing the female anatomy in a voluptuous form was celebrated in the art works of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso, etc. Venus de Milo of Praxiteles can be considered as the parameter for all plus size models, and is also one of the most famous buxom beauties of the world.
The title of the world’s first plus size supermodel can be given to Emme Aronson. Emme was a size 16 model. She became almost a household name in the 1980s. Not just that, twice she has been among People magazine’s fifty most beautiful people of the year, and once she has been awarded woman of the year by the Glamour World magazine. Even today, she commands $5,000 per day for modeling.
Other important plus size models are Sophie Dahl, Christina Schmidt, Mia Tyler, Toccara Jones, Kimberley Locke, Syleena Johnson and Crystal Renn, among others. Most of these plus size models have had alternative careers along with their modeling careers. This may be an indicative of the latent insecurities that these models may possess. Some of them also have issues with their bodies and try to lose weight.
Despite that, the boom in plus size modeling is a boon for the several plus size ladies in the world. Several clothes manufacturers are now designing fashion wear especially for them, which are popularized by plus size models. Emme has her own clothing line. Modeling agencies, too, are targeting plus size females as potential future models. Among the various training given to them is training on how to maintain their voluptuous figures.
