The word ‘plastic’ is derived from the Greek word ‘plastikos,’ which means ‘to ‘mold or shape.’ Thus, plastic surgery typically involves procedures that help in molding or shaping a specific feature or attribute of the individual’s body.
Initially, plastic surgery was restricted to reconstruction of both body and facial features that were damaged in accidents. However, with all the possibilities in the cosmetic field having opened up, such as facelifts, rhinoplasty, and liposuction, surgeons have been quick to cash on it.
There is a specific difference between plastic and cosmetic surgery. It is to be understood that cosmetic surgery is carried out to improve the physical appearance of an individual without any medical need for it. In the process, the patients’ self-esteem gets a boost because it makes them feel more socially acceptable. Either a plastic or cosmetic surgeon is capable of performing these procedures effectively.
Reconstructive plastic surgery is typically performed as a remedial surgery to correct effects of some damage that results from an accident or some congenital defects. It is not carried out with the sole aim of improving appearance. Only a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is authorized to carry out these procedures. Craniofacial surgery is one example of this surgery. It involves the treatment of pediatric congenital defects, such as a cleft lip and palate.
Liposuction is a popular form of cosmetic surgery that involves removal of the pockets of fat from the body. They are sucked out with the help of small painless incisions. This procedure costs around $ 2000.
Breast enhancement or breast augmentation surgery consists of placing saline-filled bags in-between the chest muscles and the breast tissue. It typically costs around $3,000 but varies with the locality and the expertise of the doctor.
Rhinoplasty, facelifts, botox injections, and blepharoplasty are some of the other plastic surgery procedures that are also very popular.
