The usual process in these book clubs is that a moderator decides on a book the group will read and subsequently discuss. The members of book clubs usually meet once a month to discuss the book that was assigned to them.
Before, book club members were often limited to neighbors or to people who lived in close proximity of one another. However, the use of the Internet for forums has made it possible for the membership of book clubs to include almost anyone on the planet. Putting up an online book club can be done by creating a new forum on an existing website or by creating a whole new website dedicated to your purpose.
Advantages and disadvantages of online book clubs
One of the biggest advantages of online book clubs is that you are not limited to join just one club. Other positive points are the extensive selection of books that you can discuss as well as the wide range of ideas and perspectives that you can get from online discussions.
Another notable advantage of online book clubs is that it is easier and more convenient to maintain them since you eliminate the need for members to meet at a certain place and time for the discussion.
However, there are disadvantages to online book clubs. The most notable is that the intimacy of the discussions is lost. Since online members cannot meet face to face unlike in traditional book clubs, the experience becomes less personal. Another disadvantage is that it may be hard to get the commitment of online members to participate actively since they can easily come and go.
Nowadays, books clubs are opening their doors to more and more members via the Internet. Maintaining a book club has never been easier now that everything can be done onlinex97whether it is choosing a book to read or discussing its merits with other members. However, an online book club may not give you the same warmth of a traditional book club, where you actually meet with people to conduct discussions.
Given this, those who wish to join online book clubs must be committed enough to do their part in keeping book discussions alive.
