A growing national interest in poker, advances in broadband technology and the temptation to get rich quick have all made online betting the choice of many gamblers. Online betting is one of the Internet’s largest moneymakers. Revenue from poker is expected to double to over $2 million this year, with more than 1 million users. Most of the online betting sites are based offshore to avoid legal wrangling in the United States. The Federal Wire Act of 1961 prohibits the use of phone lines for placing bets, but there is no national law that applies to Internet gambling.
There are a large number of online poker rooms that offer various poker games, including Omaha and Seven-card stud. Online poker players focus on betting patterns and reaction time of their opponents. Online poker is comparatively cheaper than traditional poker venues. Tracking patterns of play is much easier online since poker rooms support ‘Hand Histories’, tracking every action by opponents.
A large number of online casinos also offer games such as Blackjack and Roulette. These casinos are also called virtual casinos. Online casinos offer better odds for certain games. Online casinos are divided into two groups namely, Web-based and download-based casinos.
Web-based casinos offer users the choice of playing casino games without having to download any software. Games are played through plugins such as Macromedia Flash or Shockwave.
Download-based online casinos allow users to download certain software in order to play the casino games. Download-based games can be played at a faster pace than their Web-based counterparts. Online casinos offer large bonuses, often up to a 100 percent, as an incentive to not withdraw from a game.
Bookmakers offer fixed-odds over the Internet for gamblers that bet on sporting events. Since online betting is illegal in the United States, credit cards are not accepted on online betting sites. Intermediary companies like Firepay and Moneybookers offer alternative forms of placing bets.
Online money laundering is a major concern of the United States Department of Justice. The Federal Wire Act prohibits the electronic transmission of information for sports betting across states. This has still not deterred many habitual gamblers from trying their luck online.
