Obesity is a hazardous scourge that is menacing in its proportions. It has managed to annul all developments in medicine that have helped humankind to have an improved and longer life. An overweight person becomes obese when the fat percentage in the body exceeds 20%. Almost 65% of American adults fall in the obese category.
Obesity is on a continuous rise in case of children too and the percentage of obese children has almost doubled in the recent past. In obese children, fat molecules and cholesterol get deposited in the veins and arteries, causing blockage and eventually a heart attack. Some of the risks of obesity include Hypertension, Stroke, Type 2 Diabetes, Osteoarthritis, heart attacks and Coronary heart diseases.
There are many factors that are an outcome of the modern day living and can be held responsible for increasing obesity in the populace. Ready-made food is the bane of modern day and is responsible for most of the ills in this field, as it is very high in fat and calories content. It is processed and devoid of vitamins and minerals. Individuals have to resort to these, as there is paucity of time in the rushed schedules of the modern man, to cook proper healthy meals.
Exercises have also taken a back slot, as there is less time for these activities. Machines have taken over for man in all modes of life and made him more sedentary in his lifestyle. Cars have robbed individuals of their walking or biking activities and thus cut down on the several calories that were burnt in the process. Desk jobs have also contributed their bit towards promoting sedentary lifestyles.
It is only when individuals are faced with health consequences that they awaken to the situation and decide to redeem it. To overcome the situation, the obese individual needs to start by eating healthier food and exercising more. It a decision that the overweight or has to make and stick to. Crash diets are generally not the solution as there is a bounce back problem with it, as individuals initially fast and later go on a binge.
