Modern barns are characterized by their new designs and great utilitarian value. Most modern barns are designed to house machinery and animals, and for carrying out specialized farming operations, such as dairying. Modern barns are constructed of wood or steel supports and rafters or trusses, gambrel roofs, and curtain sides that may be opened to maximize airflow in summer. Ventilation is usually facilitated by fans. In some barns, tunnel ventilation is used. In this case, air is mechanically drawn through the length of the building at rapid speed. To attain rapid air movement, the roof and sides are built solid with no air inlets.
Farm structures have changed considerably in the past decades because of the changes in the lifestyle of farmers. Modern barns have concrete floors and metal roofs and walls, whereas old barns were made of wood with tin roofs. Modern barns are comparatively larger, and the family living quarters form a part of it. They are also well-equipped with facilities like refrigeration.
The large open hall area of modern barns is used for entertaining, and has pool tables and other facilities. The hall is also sometimes used as a garage. Most of the modern barns have factory built components including walls and doors, which can be assembled into a barn. Modern barns have provisions for adding stalls later or disassembling the entire unit and building on other sites. Some modern barns are constructed with a galvanized steel and wood laminate combination, which is non-porous, kick-proof and highly durable. These parts are anchored to a concrete floor in a leveled site.
Modern barns used for diary needs are designed in accordance with the feed system, food storage and transport, bedding comfort, air quality, good traction and even the amount of heat that cows produce.
The number of modern barns is on the increase, with more and more people desiring to have a place to relax after a day’s hard work.
