Any small portable computer that can be used while on the move can be termed as a mobile computing device. Pocket PCs, palmtops, cell phones and mobile trackers are some examples of mobile computing devices. Mobile computing devices may be operated by a miniature keyboard or if it uses touch screen technology, then with a pen-like stylus. Even devices that will be operated by sound input are being researched upon.
Key based mobile computing devices are better suited to devices that are heavily used. Keyboards are alphanumeric and built on the face of the device. Mobile computing devices that have requirements of wider screens are usually with graphical user interfaces. Such devices can be operated with a pen-like stylus which fits into a groove on the side of the device. There are also mobile computing devices that can be worn as watches, or with earphone like plugs. Some devices can be mounted in vehicles. Such mobile computing devices enable hands free operations.
Mobile computing devices are connected to each other and to a common server. Connections are provided through wireless technologies such as wireless LAN, WiFi, WLL, CDMA, GPRS, EDGE, etc. The devices themselves run on software, which may be compacted editions of Microsoft Windows, Linux, etc. For palmtops, there is specially software called Palm OS. Research in Motion has designed the software RIM OS, which is currently being widely used in the Blackberry devices.
Users can use mobile computing devices to check their mails and surf the internet besides other things. But mobile computing devices are limited to certain file formats and hence all websites cannot be browsed. Simple operations like making word documents, spreadsheets and small presentations can also be done on these devices. Some advanced mobile computing devices can play music and videos; however most devices are not compatible with Real Player, Quick Time or Shockwave.
The prime functions of mobile computing devices are commercial. Mobile computing devices keep users in contact with each other, especially when on the field. These devices enable communication between users for activities such as maintaining inventory and exchanging information on sale and purchase of goods. Mobile computing devices have enabled users to take immediate decisions and hence boost businesses.
