Laptops are portable, small sized computer systems that can be used anywhere and everywhere. They do not require any elaborate wiring and have revolutionized the concept of mobile computing. Mini laptops are smaller laptops often referred to as handtops or palmtops. They are small enough to fit in the palm of the hand. They weigh lesser than an average laptop and have smaller screens and keyboards. The area for mouse movement is also smaller in dimension.
Mini laptops are not as efficient in functioning as an average laptop. Mini laptops have slower processing speeds, in the range of 500 MHz to 800 MHz. The hard disk storage provided can range from 2GB to 10GB. System memory or Random Access Memory may range from 32MB to 128MB. Mini laptops may have optical drives that can read compact disks and DVDs. Common mini laptops have basic Internet connectivity features using internal modems. There may be only one expansion slot for USB support. Mini laptops, however, can be customized and upgraded to satisfy the needs of the user. Mini laptop batteries are compact and may have battery support for a shorter duration compared to the average laptop.
Mini laptops are mostly used by businesspersons and traveling employees. The price of mini laptops that offer basic features may range from $500 to $2000. Advanced mini laptops may be slightly more expensive and offer features similar to an average laptop without compromising on size. Mini laptops can be purchased from computer vending stores all over the nation or online on trade websites such as e-Bay and Amazon. Manufacturers such as Toshiba, Hewlett Packard, Dell, Apple, and IBM offer a wide selection of mini laptops.
Buyers are advised to evaluate their needs before purchasing a mini laptop. A large number of websites offer detailed information about mini laptops along with expert reviews and ratings. Newsgroups, forums, and magazines offer analysis and merit of specific mini laptops.
