Medieval swords existed in several varieties for over a number of centuries. Both experimentation and specialization in design was constant. Some common features of the “generic” medieval swords as a wide, straight, long, double-edged blade with a simple cross-guard. Medieval knights typically used two types of swords – a heavy two-handed sword with a rounded end and a short sword with a pointed end. The common form of sword is a single hand one used for shearing cuts, hacking, and also for limited thrusting.
Medieval swords can be assorted – usually by hilt design – into various categories by military historians, collectors, and curators. During the time, long bladed weapons were commonly known as “swords”, or “war swords”, or “sword of war”, or even “long sword”.
The swords of medieval Europe – about 500 to 1500 AD – mainly evolved from steel Celtic swords. Generally, all of the earliest medieval swords were designed for cutting and had amazingly thin blades. At that time swords made by the Arabs in Toledo and Damascus were more popular because of the best blades used. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, the swords were more sharply pointed and stouter.
There are several stores that specialize in high quality medieval swords for collectors of all types. Most of these stores also boast authentic replicas of the medieval weapons used by warriors and medieval knights.
If you are planning to buy medieval swords then before making a move you need to consider several things. The first is to check for the quality and authenticity of the sword. Most of the original medieval swords boast a full tang blade. That is, the part of the sword under the handle is built in a single long piece of steel. Hence, while making any purchase, make sure that you have selected a sword with a full tang blade. Today, most of the shops, which deal in swords and other related accessories, feature an online shopping mart. This allows the user to make a purchase of their favorite medieval sword from the convenience of their home.
