A marriage counselor can provide advice that helps to keep estranged couples together. There is a rise in the need for marriage counselors today with the rise in number of documented divorces. To practice as a counselor, a postgraduate with a certificate in counseling from a recognized university is a must. To be nationally certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc, NBCC, which grants the general practice credential National Certified Counselor, the person needs to also have two years of work experience in addition to the master’s degree, in a similar capacity.
Marriage counselors help couples and have to often work at length and have rooms for families in emergency and clients who can come only during weekends. They also need to have high levels of energy both physical and emotional to deal with sensitive issues. They must try and resolve the emotional conflicts by altering outlook and behaviors. They augment perception and communication among family members and help to prevent separation and divorce.
Marriage and family therapists are paid well, with an earning of around $35,580 annually documented in the year 2002. Counselors also work in institutions involved with neighborhood progress and social change. They also find placement in state and local government agencies. Presently, many counselors work on their own or in groups. Now counselors are recognized as professionals and given their due. With experience, counselors can become administrators or supervisors in their agencies. Some counselors even move into research, college teaching or consulting.
To be a good counselor, a person should be creative, innovative and communicative and should keep himself from getting emotionally involved. This hampers a clinical and rational approach to the problem at hand. He needs to be persistent and should have social skills in addition to being a good time manager.
