“Mac ‘n’ Cheese” is a common comfort food in the United States. In 1937, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese dinner was introduced in the U.S in its packaged form. Over the years, various companies have ventured into this business. Competition and increased popularity has helped manufacture improved flavor, shelf life and even different shaped macaroni.
Macaroni and cheese is not that hard to make from scratch. It is necessary to make the cheese sauce. Cooking a butter and flour mix to which milk is added provides a sauce base. Adding cheese thickens this sauce. The macaroni is to be cooked separately in warm water and then added to the sauce. A few minutes of heating cooks up a perfect macaroni and cheese dish.
There are many boxed varieties of macaroni and cheese available in the market. This typically includes a specified type of pasta and a cheese powder. The cooking procedure remains the same. The cheese mix is to be cooked in milk and sometimes water. People may also add cheese cubes to the sauce if they prefer extra cheese. A number of people add Cheddar cheese to thicken the sauce. However, other cheese may also be combined for different flavors. At times, extra ingredients including ground beef, canned tuna, tomatoes or other vegetables may be added to the preparation. Although this differs from the traditional preparation, it can be used to cook up some interesting dishes.
Packaged macaroni and cheese usually attains an orange and cream color when cooked. Its popularity has even resulted in Crayola adding a “macaroni and cheese” crayon in their collection. Whether prepared at home or cooked out of the box, the famous “Mac n Cheese” makes for a delicious meal.
