Linux operating system is a free operating system available for download or purchase from the company itself. A young software engineer from Helsinki in Finland developed the operating system about a decade ago. Linus Torvalds, along with a group of able programmers, started working on the software about eleven years ago. Initially it started as a simple UNIX-like operating system. Gradually, it developed into operating system software that would rival the famous Windows operating systems from Microsoft. The growth of Linux has progressed steadily year after year. Linux laptops also include software for using attached printers, scanners, fax machines and USB drives. The laptops provide a multiple language interface for users to work with. Some Linux laptops also allow the user to operate dual operating systems. Such laptops can run Linux along with another operating system such as Microsoft Windows.
Linux laptops face intense competition from operating system giants such as Microsoft. However, Linux laptops are still popular as they offer some unique functions and network solutions not available with other operating systems. Linux laptops are available at computer stores and outlets all over the nation. Some websites such as e-Bay and Amazon also sell Linux laptops using credit card payments and other facilities such as Pay Pal.
Laptop manufacturers such as Toshiba, Dell, Compaq, Acer, Advent, Apple, IBM, Cannon, Sharp, Sony, Siemens, and Asus offer Linux-based laptops. Some companies also make customized Linux laptops for industries and office organizations.
