Colleges and universities have developed Degree Programs that can provide a recognized degree from one’s life experience and this is known as a Life Experience bachelor’s degree.
Life experience degrees are awarded to those individuals who have demonstrated core competencies of skill and knowledge in their prospective career field. Schools that offer life experience degrees use a prior learning assessment bar to assess prior experience. Prior experience includes military service, work experience, prior college, certificates of achievement, travel, professional development courses and workshops, community and volunteer services and many more. Besides prior experience, other eligibility criteria include previous educational achievements, employer-sponsored training and attendance of workshops, participation in organizations, both professional and non-professional, personal goals, lifestyle, hobbies, and travel, participation in volunteer activities and community service and independent reading, viewing, listening, or writing. The information provided for review by the school, for this degree, should be verifiable. Very often, many schools ask for more information, if they feel that the information is not accurate or complete.
To qualify, most of the schools require the candidate to fill in an application form, stating prior experience and other eligibility criteria as decided by the school. People with little or no experience can opt for an equivalency test. Passing the test with a percentage above the minimum percentage set by the school also makes you eligible for this degree. Schools usually grant the degree 15 to 20 days after the completion of the application process. However, the number of days may vary from school to school.
A Life Experience degree can help one advance in one’s current career or accomplish a life long dream that could not have been attained without a college degree. To a certain extent, a life experience degree can be considered a substitute for a college degree.
