It’s been over 30 years since laser surgery was first used on humans to treat them for various diseases. Since then, its popularity has soared even higher because it can cure a number of problems quickly, and without causing much pain.
Laser surgery is most frequently used in dentistry, cancer treatment, eye disorder treatment, to remove tumors and to destroy harmful tissues. Some uncommon treatments include bone or muscle disorder treatment, ear nose and throat disorder treatment, and long-lasting removal of body hair.
For medical treatment, there are three kinds of lasers used. The first one is the carbon dioxide laser, which helps in reducing bleeding while it the tissue is being cut. ‘Nd:YAG’ laser, the second one, has the capacity to penetrate inside the tissue much more deeply compared to other lasers. Finally, Argon lasers are used mostly for eye surgery, as the penetration needed is limited.
The benefits of laser surgery are obvious, as it is bloodless surgery and the results too are very remarkable. The chances of scarring and catching an infection are reduced. Most importantly, laser surgery is a safe and effective means of treatment.
On the other hand, the drawback of laser surgery is that there are very few surgeons who are trained to perform laser surgery. Also, the laser equipment is very expensive and bulky compared to other surgical tools. While performing a laser operation, safety precautions should be strictly followed.
Before a patient decides to go in for laser surgery, he should ask his surgeon how the laser surgery proves to be better than traditional surgery. Also, he should enquire about the doctor’s previous experience with laser surgeries.
