Heat, dust and scratches can damage CDs, so it is essential to store them safely. There are various forms of CD cases available for this purpose. Hard CD cases are commonly known as CD jewel cases and are similar to audio CD cases.
Misleading though it may sound, a jewel case is not a case for keeping jewels. It is a plastic case large enough to hold the compact disc and the liner notes. The liner notes, typically will be a 12 cm x 12 cm booklet or a single 12 cm x 24 cm leaf folded in half. The lid of the case contains four to six “teeth” to keep the notes in place.
There are different types of CD jewel cases – super jewel box, single jewel case, slim CD jewel case, double jewel case, triple jewel case and color jewel case.
Double albums can be packaged in a normal jewel box with a hinged tray or in a double jewel case, which is equivalent to the size of two normal jewel cases. There are slim line jewel cases, which are half the thickness of a. standard CD jewel case. This can be a common space-saving packaging for burned CD-ROMs, as it allows storage of twice the number of CDs in the same space.
The CD jewel case has a weakness, though. The hinges for the lid are a single layer of thin plastic, which breaks easily if the case is subjected to any stress or pressure. In a bid to improvise upon the design and solve the problem with the fragile hinges, the “Super Jewel Box” was developed; it offers a strengthened hinge area.
CD jewel cases are made in attractive models and are available in different price ranges. They are a great way of storing CDs and ensuring that the information stored on it are safe
