One of the most common factors for cause of bad breath is the type of food that is eaten. The bad breath caused by the food can be formed in two ways, one is in the mouth by the bacteria and other is by the food that goes into the digestive system.
In a majority of the cases, the food particles that remain in the mouth start decaying and decomposing. In the mouth, certain anaerobic bacteria break down the protein present in that particular food and produces sulphur compounds. The sulphur compounds that are produced, mix with the mouth air and produce a foul or bad smell. In dairy products, like milk, the bacteria in the mouth break down the lactose protein present in the milk and release amino acids, which turn into sulphur compounds creating bad breath.
Food like garlic, onion and cabbage have very strong odor. When the food goes into the stomach the digestive system breaks down the food into compound molecules. These molecules of the food with strong smell are absorbed by the bloodstream and carried to the lungs. The molecules mix with the breath that is exhaled from the lungs and creates bad breath. The bad breath that is created in the mouth is generally temporary whereas the effect of bad breath from the food that goes into the digestive system continues for a longer duration until it is flushed out of the body.
A high protein or high fat diet and lack of carbohydrates also cause bad breath. Due to lack of carbohydrates, the body utilizes the protein and fat to provide energy that would otherwise be used by carbohydrates such as glucose. When the stomach breaks down the fat and protein in the body, it produces a chemical called ketones which is released through the breath. Since ketones have a bad smell, breath smells bad.
As food plays a very important role in creating bad breath, people with bad breath problems should avoid food that triggers the problem and maintain good oral hygiene all the time.
