Laminate flooring is flooring made of a material that looks like authentic wood flooring. It is composed of synthetic materials or synthetic materials combined with natural ones. These are extremely durable and do not take much time to install or effort to keep clean.
Laminate flooring is installed by floating planks over plywood, oriented strand board [OSB], concrete slabs and floor coverings. These planks are locked together with tongue and grooves, thus making them compact. Typically, the floors are not held together but instead, rested on a thin foam pad.
The process of installation of laminate flooring is fairly simple. It begins with the leveling of the floor, if the surface is uneven. The elevated spots need to be grounded down and any surface depressions need to be filled in. Ideally, there should be a 1/4″ gap along the whole perimeter of the installation. The floor should not be installed too close to the wall. The wall from where the flooring is to be installed should be visible.
The planks should be checked for any damages before installation. This saves the trouble of removing them when once installed. Most laminate floors do not require glue to secure the planks and tiles together. In fact, oftentimes using glue results in the formation of cracks. Most people prefer glue-less laminate installation, as it does not require much expertise and is not time-consuming. Other options that can be chosen include pre-glued floors made in factories that simply require some water to activate the glue prior to installation.
After they are laid, laminate floors should be allowed to settle for a period of three days. This prevents moisture from accumulating inside the laminate and ensures there is no expansion or contraction during installation. Once installed, it is very difficult to remove the flooring and doing so may result in damages.
The simple process involved in installing laminate flooring is one of the reasons it is a preferred flooring choice of many people. It can be easily installed by a homeowner himself without professional help.
