However, they should be in a condition that, when sold, generate enough revenue to cover an organization’s administrative expenses. The title to the vehicle is very important when donating. However, if there is no title, the charity organization may still be able to make some arrangements. The vehicle should be free of any lien.
Donating a vehicle is hassle-free. The organization has the vehicle towed away by a reliable, bonded, and licensed towing company free of charge. The towing company gets in touch with the donor within three to four working days and tows away the vehicle. It is advisable that donors ensure in advance that there are no hidden costs involved. An online application form has to be filled out by donors to contact the organization to schedule a pick-up. Donations ought to be made to an IRS registered non-profit making organization.
An added advantage of donating vehicles is that it is tax deductible. When the vehicle is accepted by the charity organization, proper documentation for tax-deductible donation purposes is issued. The amount of tax to be deducted may be based on the market value or the amount for which the vehicle is sold. Tax to be deducted is based on the sales proceeds up to $500. If the sale proceeds are more than $500, the amount is decided accordingly and the donor is informed. Individual tax situations differ, so it is recommended that donors check with a tax expert to find out the benefits that they may receive.
Any problem with the vehicle until it has been picked up by the organization is the liability of the donors. All the previous fines and storage charges are the donor’s responsibility. After the vehicle is towed, it is the responsibility of the organization.
