Growing Orchids

Growing orchids is a beautiful task. You may want to grow this royal family of plants either at home or commercially, but a lot of care and perseverance is required to produce a healthy, full-bloom exotic variety. You have thousands of different orchids to choose from, each requiring delicate nurturing and a specific environment.

Scientifically, orchids require a temperature zone similar to the condition of the place where they originated. There are varieties which thrive in high temperatures, and at the same time there are some that would wilt if the temperature rises above 60 degrees. Hybrids will adapt more to the new environment, as compared to the purebred plants.

Orchids growing in pots will break down the medium in one or two years. Repotting is recommended, which should be done by removing the plant carefully without breaking the roots. Orchids that fail to bloom are the ones who develop poor root systems, are subjected to frequent over watering, don’t have temperature variation or are exposed to insufficient light.

Sunlight is absorbed by the plants from above, and not sideways. Keep a plant too far away from a window and it will result in weaker and smaller leaves. Water has to be clean and, if possible, treated by distillation or reverse osmosis. Water carrying too many softeners will have harmful minerals, resulting in growth retardation and destroying the roots of this delicate plant.

If the buds of your plant are turning an unhealthy yellow or falling off, check if there are frequent temperature swings in the area. Make sure it is not close to the air conditioner or a heating vent.

One orchid pod can produce around 4 million seeds. Cultivators may feel that this number will assure the plant’s reproduction but the seeds are very small; hence, it requires support to grow into a mature plant. To fulfill this need a relationship is formed between the seedling and some species of fungi which give the seed some much-needed supplement. Following some basic tips, you can grow this beautiful flower successfully.
