Gift Boxes

People like putting things away into boxes to protect them from any harm. Even our homes are, ultimately just boxes to which we retire to seek refuge from the world. A box is perhaps an emblem of security. Whatever goes inside is safe until the day it is brought out. That is why all things we treasure, from our memories to our gifts are kept in boxes to make them last longer than they would.

As if giving something off without any ill feeling is not enough, people are expected to present what they give in an acceptable form. Etiquettes demand that every gift be wrapped to perfection or at least be placed in a gift box before it is given away. It might seem sad that people are so judgmental of packaging, but nonetheless, they have learnt to make the best of such situations. The result is that at times the gift boxes are more interesting than the gifts themselves. Gift boxes are made from various materials and come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Generally, all products come in boxes but these are not considered pretty enough to gift the product. Gift boxes that suit the product’s size are used instead. The most popular types of gift boxes are the pale pastel, square ones and these are tied up with contrastingly bright ribbons to make them even more attractive.

Recent trends of giving have seen a rise in the use of unusual materials such as handmade paper, jute, and wood to make gift boxes. These boxes are far more expensive than the regular paper variety and some are even imported from as far as Asia. Another popular trend in gift boxes is to have them decorated with traditional artwork. At times, they are simply painted to convert them into picturesque murals. Wicker baskets and cloth and paper bags are also used to package gifts instead of gift boxes.
