Garage Doors

There are several kinds of garage doors being used in American homes, ranging from simple wooden ones to sturdier steel ones. There are heavy doors that tip the scales at about 400 pounds.

New garage doors come in a choice of four materials: wood, steel, aluminum, and fiberglass. Out of these, the most popular choices are wood and steel. Doors made of wood look natural and are affordable, but are not as durable as steel doors. Steel doors give greater strength and higher security but are not easy to repair. Aluminum garage doors are fairly popular as they are lightweight and inexpensive. Fiberglass garage doors are not as popular, as fiberglass is a poor insulator and breaks quite easily.

The cost for a new garage door depends on the type of the material and quality of construction. Wood doors begin at about $400 and go up to $2,000, while steel ranges between $800 and $1,000. Manufacturers of doors for garages are now making use of composite materials that stand up better to the weather, and are less expensive than steel doors.

Garage doors need to be washed regularly with a garden hose. They should not be washed with a pressure washer to keep them looking new and in good operating condition. To keep their moving parts working freely, lubricate them occasionally with light household oil. The door is often equipped with an electric opener, so there is little difficulty in lifting the door.

Garage seals are also very useful in preventing rodents from getting into the garage. These seals can be fitted easily onto wooden or steel garage doors. The life of the garage door depends on how carefully it is been handled.
