LCD or liquid crystal display technology has revolutionized the computer industry. The advantages are such that LCD monitors are fast emerging as a popular choice replacing CRT or cathode ray tube monitor in the process. The dominant variations of the LCD monitors are the flat panel displays.
Flat panel display monitors are thin, flat electronic devices used to display images, graphics and alphanumeric information. Flat panel displays monitors have specific matrix types- passive or active associated with them. The most commonly used are the passive matrix LCDs, because they are less expensive than the active-matrix monitors.
While shopping for flat panel industrial monitors you must keep in mind features such as the contrast ratio, brightness, viewing angle and the response time.
Brightness: LCD monitors are bright enough. The brightness is measured in nits and the standard brightness ranges from 250-350 nits.
Viewing angle: Since many people will be flat LCD industrial monitor at the same time, you must ensure that the viewing angle is between 120 degrees vertical and 140 degrees horizontal. This is ideal angle for wider viewing.
Apart from brightness and viewing angle you must keep in mind factors such as effective screen width and height, screen diagonal and luminance. Screen size is usually given as a diagonal.
Luminance refers to the intensity per unit area projected in a particular direction. Also, you must consider factors such as mounting options as also the environmental operating conditions. This especially gains significance, if the LCD monitor is meant for outdoor activities. You must ensure that contaminants do not affect its smooth functioning.
Apart from the advantages in terms of brightness, resolutions, LCDs score over CRTs in terms of longevity and power consumption. In fact, the power required to run an LCD is one-third of that required for a CRT. Consequently, the heat generated by an LCD is also comparatively less than a CRT.
