Storage is an important aspect of data backup. Data that is not stored properly cannot be retrieved when required and, therefore, individuals and firms should give priority to data storage. Small volumes of data can be backed up on floppies and CDs. These devices should be stored in vaults, in a dust- and moisture-free environment. Tape storage can be used for larger volumes of data, and tapes also require a similar environment. Related to tape storage are tape autoloaders, libraries and tape drives.
Digital vaults are the latest addition to data backup storage facilities. They provide greater data safety than physical vaults, and easier access to authorized users. Data can be accessed from any computer or laptop, at any location, by authorized users.
Service providers offer online data backup storage for different platforms like Windows or Mac, as well as for different volumes of data. Individuals and firms can choose data storage packages based on the volume of critical data they need to preserve. Data is compressed and encrypted before it is transmitted and stored in remote offsite locations. Data can be easily recovered within minutes, even during weekends and holidays. In addition, certain service providers offer mobile vaults that contain disks onto which backup data is written. Mobile vaults are used when very large volumes of data need to be recovered. These vaults are carefully packed and delivered to client offices.
Traditionally, backup tape was not encrypted before storage because very few people knew how to read data from a tape. However, with unauthorized users now easily gaining access to data on tapes, there is a growing demand for encryption. In addition, the need for digital storage was demonstrated by the devastation unleashed by Hurricane Katrina, which wiped out many important records. Data security companies, in fact, suggest three different backups of vital data.
