Data backup solutions are crucial for individuals and firms dealing with large volumes of data that need to be preserved. Earlier, data could only be stored on floppies and CDs. Today, a variety of options are available based on the size of the business and its data protection needs. In fact, some firms specialize in providing data backup solutions.
Firms providing data backup solutions generally offer separate packages for home offices, small firms, and large enterprises. Home-office data backup solutions include the backup of PCs and laptops, and their synchronization. For small business firms, basic solutions include server and workstation backup and the mirroring of the server. Large organizations are offered similar facilities, along with synchronization with branch offices and the mirroring of web server content.
Data backup also involves the use of multi-environment data management solutions covering Windows, Linux, UNIX, and other platforms. Certain tools also enable high speed sorting and extraction of data that needs backup.
Onsite, online, and archiving solutions are offered by many service providers. Onsite solutions are offered at the client’s office. These can be offered at a single site, for example, the head office, or at several sites, such as branch offices. To provide additional backup, onsite solutions can be supplemented with offsite mirroring. With online solutions, data is automatically transferred to remote offsite locations of the service provider, either continuously or at a scheduled time. Archiving is useful for data that is not used regularly, but needs to be preserved for future use.
Backup solutions are generally provided at a fixed rate per month based on the number of users, computers, or volume of data. Round-the-clock support is assured in the case of online solutions. Data recovery is also possible during weekends and holidays. Data backup solutions help to reduce the burden on IT personnel of business firms, who can concentrate on other tasks.
