Software involves instructions that tell a computer what needs to be done. Data backup software can be purchased and installed by individuals and business firms. Purchasing and installation can also be left to firms specializing in data backup.
Backup software solutions cater to various data preservation needs, such as full, incremental, or differential backup. All backups must start with a full backup, involving the entire hard drive or a section of it. In incremental backup only those files that have been modified since the last backup, full or incremental are saved. In differential backup, only those files that have been modified since the last full backup are saved.
Address-book backup and favorites backup enable backup of email addresses and Internet favorites, respectively. Software solutions also offer backup scheduling. Some permit the continuous backup of files as they are created or modified, while others enable daily, weekly, monthly or yearly backups as required by clients. Backup software covers multiple environments, such as Windows, Linux, and UNIX.
Backup software provides backup on CDs, DVDs, zip drives, and FTP locations. Backup data is compressed so that more data can be stored in one location. Data can also be protected with passwords and encryption for secure storage. In addition, backup software enables the filtering of data so that only important files are included. After data backup, the software compares this data with the original to check for errors. Providing a list of backup files and quick recovery of data are other functions performed by backup software.
Backup software can often be downloaded free of cost, for a trial. It can be installed and used for data backup. If the client is happy, a license key can be requested from the vendor. Different types of backup software are available for home offices, small firms, and large enterprises.
