Every year, thousands of babies across the United States die or are injured as a result of accidents, often due to loose screws or slats in the cribs. Although a trade group called Juvenile Products Manufacturer’s Association (JPMA) has set up certain strict safety standards or guidelines, yet most manufacturers do not follow them properly. According to certain sources, only 18 out of 65 manufacturers submit their cribs for testing under JPMA’s program. As a result of this, unsafe and unreliable cribs end up reaching the market. These end up being the reason why innocent infants get injured or die.
Some common hazards include strangulation, head entrapment risk due to the loosening and separation of side rails or due to a missing or loose spindle or slat in side rails, suffocation risk, falling risk, choking hazard and laceration risk due to fingers getting trapped in the folding drop gate.
In order to ensure that the right and the safest possible crib is being bought, the customer must check for a JPMA sticker or should go in for brands which have cleared federal as well as voluntary safety standards. Not only this, but also a hand-me-down crib or a playpen must never be used, for it may be a design which pre-dates the federal safety standards. Along with this, it is really essential for parents to keep a regular watch and tab on the crib’s hardware in order to make sure that the screws and the slats haven’t come loose. The U.S. Consumer product safety commission, along with several other public and private institutions, warns and informs the masses about the credibility of the products that are available in the market. If followed, these measures and guidelines can, in a lot of ways, help people make the right decision when it comes to buying the safest possible furniture for their new-born.
