DSL Speed Test helps to measure the download and upload rate of a DSL connection. Even though DSL internet connections offer reasonably good performance, it is a good idea to check the speed of the internet connection with DSL speed test. The speed test will help one to accurately judge the current line output or internet connection speed.
Several DSL Speed Test software programs are available right in the market, which provide an easy and efficient way to test the speed of the Internet connection. One can use any of these software programs to measure the Internet connection bandwidth before tweaking the network setup. There are several websites also which offer the same facility. The download speed of the internet connection is calculated by sending a large file to one’s computer. It is recommended that before starting the speed test, all running programs except the test window are closed. The unwanted temporary internet files (cache) have to be cleared. This is important as one cannot accurately check the DSL speed if any other program is working alongside the test.
While conducting a DSL speed test, the test site one chooses should ideally be near one’s physical location. Accuracy cannot be fully guaranteed if the site is far away. The connection speed can change from one host to another because of the following reasons – the ISP bandwidth, internet traffic, server capacity, the hardware used, and the operating system. Another deciding factor is whether one is accessing cached or non-cached data. Though these factors will affect the download time, DSL speed test is still a good identification of how fast or slow the data transfer of information is over one’s internet connection.
Most speed tests are configured not to save or cache the test web page of the computer so that the test may be repeated anytime. The tests also help to check the speed for loading graphics and text separately. DSL speed test is usually measured in Kbits per second.
