The South American city of Chile has had a rich and colorful cultural background since the first settlers set foot on the land over 10,000 years ago. From the ancient Incas and Native Americans to the Spaniards and French, each of these civilizations has left a lasting impact on the culture and traditions of the country.
Chile takes great pride in its cultural heritage and lays great emphasis on the fine arts. Although Spanish is the country’s official language, several native languages are still spoken in some parts. The most unique linguistic minority group is the speakers of Rapa Nui, a Polynesian dialect spoken on Easter Island.
Over 90% of the Chilean population is Roman Catholic. This is clearly visible through the magnificent colonial churches and roadside shrines that are found all throughout the country.
Chile has one of the richest resources of fine arts in Latin America. The country is most notable for its poetry. Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral are two Chileans who have received a Nobel Prize in Literature for their masterful work in the field of poetry. It is no wonder that the locals call their country ‘Pais de Poetas’, or ‘Land of Poets’.
Chile’s rich culture is also visible through its folk music and dance. ‘Cueca’ is the most popular dance, depicting conquest and submission. A number of festivals are also celebrated throughout the year, commemorating different episodes from Chile’s history.
There are several buildings and institutions throughout the country dedicated to promoting the various arts. The Palace of Fine Arts, the National Library, the National Ballet and the various orchestras and theaters all encourage the development of these arts.
Chile’s greatness is not restricted to the indoor arena. Sports are a major part of the country’s culture. Soccer is by far the most popular sport with tennis, skiing and racing also gaining popularity.
From folk music and dance to its own unique cuisine and wines, Chile is bound to leave a visitor spellbound.
