The popularity of culinary arts as a profession has grown in recent years, thanks in part to the number of top grossing TV programs on food preparation and cooking. Chefs have become celebrities in their own rights.
As a result, culinary arts schools have opened up everywhere. Famous chefs put up schools of their own to get a chunk off the growing market. While big international institutions lure students with their scientific methods and highly sophisticated equipment. Culinary arts schools are, however, very expensive. Food enthusiasts and cooking hobbyists may opt for short courses on culinary arts in neighborhood schools and centers.

Most schools entice you with famous faculty names and awards they have received. But remember, that the most important thing you have to consider is the extent of hands-on training and exposure you will get from an institute. After all, cooking or culinary arts is a highly evolving and highly competitive business. You must get all the basics covered. Look for schools that have a wide network of on the job training grounds or externships. There are schools that offer externships across the country and Europe or Asia.
But culinary arts schools are not just for those aspiring to be chefs or those with an exceptional talent in cooking. Several culinary arts institutes and schools offer degrees and courses on hotel and restaurant management too. For those who cannot afford to take on a full degree program in culinary arts, there are alternative programs available. Some culinary schools offer nine-month diploma courses. There are those that offer programs in pastry and baking and culinary management in six to eleven month programs.
