Culinary art is a perfect career choice for people who are passionate about the art of cooking. For people with zeal and enthusiasm and who like to be connected with food and people, culinary arts is the right calling.
A career in culinary arts can only fructify after completing a course in a culinary school. Though one may be a great cook, it is impossible to become an expert learning culinary arts by oneself. A professional qualification is necessary for taking up the job of a chef in a good restaurant.
There are many career options in the field of culinary arts. Aside from the traditional roles of a chef, one can consider positions in management as executive chef, in sales, as catering director or in administration, as food and beverage manager. An accredited school program will offer a certificate or a degree in any of these fields.
Although certification is not required to enter the field, it can be a measure of success and can lead to further advancement and higher-paying positions. A culinary art degree, gives an edge over other prospective culinary art job seekers. There are a number of colleges and universities in the US offering 4-year programs in hotel management or food service management. These courses provide instruction in subjects such as nutrition and food planning and preparation, as well as accounting, business, law and management, and computer science. Some culinary programs combine classroom and laboratory study with internships that provide on-the-job experience.
Culinary art management degrees also deal with cuisine from all over the world. Culinary programs of institutions such as the Art Institute are top-notch education and training in the culinary fields of expertise such as restaurant and catering management, baking and pastry and culinary management. Many culinary institutes also offer detailed courses such as kitchen and restaurant management.
Food service managers can also apply for a certification called Foodservice Management Professional (FMP). It provides recognition of professional proficiency for managers. The Educational Foundation of the National Restaurant Association bestows this certificate. A professional degree and training in culinary arts provides a foundation for a career that involves creativity and a sense of aesthetics.
