A foundation is a kind of charitable organization set up by individuals or institutions, as a legal entity. It is usually a corporation or a trust headed by prominent members of the society. It is generally organized with the purpose of distributing grants or funds to support causes in line with the goals of the foundation. There are many foundations in third world countries, as well as developed ones.
The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation Of America is an organization dedicated to helping patients afflicted by Crohn’s disease. The foundation receives funds through various donors that are generally people who have been associated with the disease in some form or the other. There are philanthropists too, who donate liberally to the cause. The funds thus generated are used for the treatment and rehabilitation of patients. Some of the funds are also diverted into research activities, for finding preventive as well as curative medicines.
Patients, friends, and family of the patients, who want to approach these foundations, can do so either through the net or by approaching the centers directly. These foundations also have regional centers in various states. Crohn’s disease patients and their family require lot of support and help. Since this is a chronic ailment, patients require help through out their life. These foundations provide the much-required help in the form of monetary support, or information on the various facets of the disease.
A patient suffering from this disease shows mild symptoms of gas and abdominal pain to severe symptom of uncontrollable bowel movements. The disease also takes an emotional toll on patients, as it causes isolation, embarrassment and anxiety. The foundations help patients to accept the reality of the disease and adjust to it both, socially and physically. They act as a support system that afflicted patients and their family can turn to for emotional, physical and financial support.
